Hey Guys!
I just thought I'd check in with you after a long week at football pre-season. I always love the beginning of football season...well, football season in general. It's been a long time since I've worked pre-season football, and even those 10 years ago (my goodness, has it really been that long!??!?) it was college football, not high school.
It's amazing how much influence the NFL has on these players! Instead of being excited that they're playing high school football, I cannot tell you how many Freshman wanted different face masks, a snazzier helmet or not so tight fitting a chin strap and ear pads ('cuz heaven forbid the NFL players wear a properly fitting helmet! :) ).
I'll have you all know the "Angel of Death" tag our bastketball coach bestowed on me last winter still stands. The injury toll for last week is:
Wednesday - 1 dislocated shoulder (volleyball)
Thursday - 1 dislocted shoulder (football)
1 MCL Sprain (football)
1 Dislocated thumb (football) - needed an open reduction/surgery
1 Subluxed (dislocated, but then "pops" back in) kneecap (girls soccer)
1 possibly Fractured Wrist (girls soccer) ended up just sprained
1 dislocated/fractured pinkie (football)
1 post-surgery ACL reconstruction, who we thought may have re-torn or poorly rehabbed his ACL and possibly torn his MCL (football) ended up he just didn't rehab well, all ligaments intact (Yep, busy Thursday for us)
Friday - 1 dislocated shoulder (football) - torn labrum (the cartilage in the shoulder)
Not one little whiney person injury in the bunch! Now, granted Bill keeps reassuring me it's not my presence, but you all know my Yang. This is what my sister calls the ability for me to attract the weird people, situations and/or freaky stuff in life. :) Well, my Yang is in full force, once again. Let's just hope it calms down about. At this rate, we'll have to cancel all of our sports season for the fall in lieu of not enough healthy players! :)
Here's the thing that got to me yesterday and reminded me how influential professional athletes can be to our young people. (Talk about having - sometimes - the WRONG heroes!) At the end of practice/intrasquad scrimmage yesterday our varisty football team was running sprints, so I headed inside to get cleaned up. It was the end of a long week and I was ready for some relaxation before this coming week, when all of our sports are officially in full swing. Almost as soon as I got back to the Athletic Training Room, the radio called me or Bill back to the field. The young man we saw (we went together) had "tweaked" his knee running sprints. Bill evaluated him and came to the conclusion it was just a little "tweak" to the lower part of the thigh muscle (quad). He was having trouble walking, so Bill asked me to take him in on our golf cart while he headed out to the team huddle to talk to the coach once they finished. As we pulled away from teh field, the huddle broke and the team came running towards the locker room and, essentially, in our general direction. They young man on the back of the cart, raises his arm straight up into the air, with a fist (think hitler-esque, but a fist instead of open hand)towards his team. I yelled at him to put his hand down and hold on to the golf cart! He was trying to "showboat" and mimic the NFL players when THEY leave the field. I was just amazed and extremely annoyed. Every day I realize people never ceases to amaze me.
I'm off to get some rest before another fun week of high school preseason sports! Look for more stories as they occur! :)
